Although waste management recycling is a popular topic in many progressive cities in the country, many people don’t know the most basic recycling facts. For a long time, I have wanted to help the environment by recycling, but I didn’t even know what I could recycle and what I couldn’t. It turns out that a lot more can be recycled than I had assumed. Many of the plastic packages that I had assumed were beyond hope can actually be taken if you leave them at the curbside. In other cases, the glossy paper that I thought could be recycled couldn’t in my particular district. It varies from place to place, so if you really want to help the environment by recycling, make sure that you know what is going on where you live.

Of course, although helping the environment by recycling is popular, there are many other ways to make a difference in the future of the earth. As a matter of fact, many people think that environmental recycling isn’t the most important activity in stopping global environmental catastrophe. They say that, although you can help the environment by recycling, you can help it even more by turning down the heat, turning off the lights when you leave a room, cutting down your commute and using alternative forms of transportation. Recycling is a great first step because it is easy, but you should probably try to go further. Many of these other activities can make a huge difference in cutting down on your carbon footprint.

Help The Environment By Recycling

One of the best things you can do to make the earth cleaner, greener, and Healthier, is to buy locally grown produce. Although you can help the environment by recycling, you can help even more by cutting down on your fossil fuel consumption. Food that is grown in other countries takes a tremendous amount of energy to get over here. That energy, of course, comes from combustible And nonrenewable fuel. Even biodiesel isn’t very good for the air. Basically, when you burn something to get around, you cause environmental damage.

Buying food grown by local farmers is a much better way to do it than relying on food going overseas. Although many areas can’t support a completely local agriculture, you certainly can make things better. It is all about taking the time to make the changes one by one. When we work together we can create a better tomorrow.

Tons of waste are produced every year and are sent to someplace where they will either be buried or burned. But according to reports, 75% of produced waste can actually be recycled. Recycling, which is the process of creating new products from used materials, can be traced back from the time of Plato, when resources were scarce.

The practice was carried on to war periods until it became a significant part in the modern approach to waste management. But unlike before, recycling efforts today are not pushed by the scarcity of resources, rather, they are a decent response to environmental issues. Waste management and recycling, specifically, are attempts to preserve the environment and protect all living things. And as the environment is continuously being threatened by massive waste production, recycling is hoped to be a global endeavor.

Why recycle?
Landfills and incinerators are the most common destinations of collected waste. Although proven helpful in waste disposal, these two have been widely criticized for their environmental effects. Burying waste in landfills particularly allows for the release of methane gas, a type of greenhouse gas that is even more dangerous than carbon dioxide. Aside from that, landfills can leach other hazardous materials and may cause water pollution. And because waste materials are known to take many years to decompose, with some requiring hundreds to thousands of years, more landfill space are needed, which are becoming expensive and scarce. Incinerators, meanwhile, similarly emit greenhouse gas and other toxic chemicals that endanger human health and trigger global climate changes. Recycling responds to these problems by decreasing the volume of waste sent to landfills and incinerators. Rather than disposed of, waste materials are turned into something more useful.

By making new products out of used products, recycling contributes to the conservation of energy. Generally, it takes less energy to process an already processed material. For instance, the production of paper using recycled materials uses 40% less of the time needed to make the same product from virgin materials. This energy conservation also provides small openings for water and air pollution. In the same way, recycling significantly reduces the consumption of raw materials, which naturally contributes to the conservation of resources. Recycling a ton of newspaper, for instance, saves 12 trees.

But aside from the environmental benefits, the economical benefits of recycling are also one reason it has been practiced in many countries. On a national scale, recycling can create a lot of jobs that offer decent wages. And with the recycling industry becoming even more successful, more businesses are expected to grow and provide more job opportunities. Individuals, on the other hand, can make small business through recycling projects. They can create new products, such as bags and cards, from scraps and sell them for a small price. Selling scrap materials to certain organizations and individuals, who in turn will make recycled items for reselling, is as well a good way to earn money.

Buying recyclable and recycled products is also encouraged to support the recycling industry and as a whole to protect the environment. The symbol of three moving arrows on a product signifies it is recyclable. Such arrows represent the process of recycling: from becoming a waste to reprocessing to reselling. And this symbol coined the term “close the loop,” an accurate representation of waste management and recycling.

Burning or incineration had always been the old reliable in waste disposal since time immemorial. Today, we already have waste management systems and several methods of disposing wastes: landfills, incineration, minimization, composting, and recycling.

Each of these methods has its own good and bad points in terms of efficiency, cleanliness in relation to the environment, and economic feasibility. There has not been a total winner in any of these waste management disposal methods.

Recycling comes nearest because it is clean (no harmful emissions or toxic waste discharges) it is efficient (does not need big spaces) and cheap (little or no investments).

Waste Management and Recycling

What is recycling, and what are its advantages over the other waste disposal methods?

Waste Management and Recycling

In absolute terms, recycling is actually not a disposal system. It is the reuse of materials that had been disposed of as waste. Theoretically, recycling is the continued use of materials for the same purpose.

In practice, recycling is the extension of the useful life of the material, but it can be in some other form. Most of today’s recyclable materials are post-consumer waste (empty glass and plastic bottles, used paper and cartoons, etc.)

The most common items that are recycled in industrialized nations are aluminum soda cans, aerosol cans, plastic and glass bottles and jars, old newspapers and magazines, and cardboards or used carton boxes.

New materials

When paper is recycled, the fibers lose their length, thereby making it less useful for high grade paper (book or bond paper, etc). Most of them are used to make cartoons, low-grade newsprint and other low-grade paper products. Some types of plastic are composed of the same type of materials and are relatively easy to recycle into new products.

As an alternative to plain garbage disposal, recycling is useful in the sense that it does not add to the waste in landfills, and it becomes another material resource.

Resource recovery

Today, experts and the enlightened populace have acknowledged that simply disposing of waste materials is unsustainable in the long run. The supply of raw materials from nature is finite and cannot last.

In waste management, there is a new idea that considers waste materials as a resource to be exploited and used, and not the old concept of looking at them as a challenge to be managed or disposed of. It is called resource recovery.

Resource recovery can take different forms. One is the materials might be extracted and recycled accordingly, or some of them are to be converted into energy (electricity).

Costs and economics

Used materials have to compete with new materials in manufacturing. Most often, collection costs of recyclables are higher than costs of new materials.

However, not many are aware that it usually requires less energy, less water, and less other resources to recycle materials than produce the product from new materials. (Recycling 1000 kilos of aluminum cans save 5000 kilos of bauxite ore to be mined, and 95% of the energy to refine it.)

The economics of a successful recycling process depends on manufacturers making products from recovered materials and consumers buying these products.

Recycling is one method of waste management that is nearest to the ideal – less or no actual physical wastage, low costs, and no environmental damage.

Americans dispose of more than 700 billion pounds of paper, glass, plastic, wood, food, metal, clothing, electronics and other refuse annually.

The problem of managing mountains of waste may seem overwhelming, but experts note there are easy ways for consumers to make a difference every day.

“Old habits might die hard, like forgetting to recycle a soda can or newspaper, but the good news is, there are many simple ways to cut down on waste, from buying concentrated household products to buying in bulk,” says environmental expert Kim Carlson.

Carlson offers the following tips to help consumers reduce, recycle and reuse waste:

Keep it loose. Buy screwdrivers, nails and other hardware items in loose bins. At the grocery store, choose produce that is not in prepackaged containers.

Bring your own bag. Reuse bags and containers. Keep a supply of bags on hand for future shopping trips, or take your own canvas tote bag to the grocery store.

Consider concentrated detergent. Concentrated products often require less packaging, resulting in less energy to transport to the store and less plastic to recycle. All small &amp, mighty is a new concentrated laundry detergent (one 32-ounce bottle cleans as many loads as the regular 100-ounce bottle). In addition to less packaging, the formula contains 74 percent less water than regular detergent.

Choose to reuse. Reach for reusable products such as cloth napkins, sponges or dishcloths instead of paper towels.

Recharge and renew. Use rechargeable batteries and recycle old batteries to help reduce garbage and keep toxic metals out of the environment.

Buy smart. Look for long-lasting, energy-saving appliances with the Energy Star label and electronic equipment with good warranties.

Get crafty. Reuse scrap paper and envelopes. Save and reuse ribbons, tissue paper, gift boxes and even wrapping paper. Save cardboard boxes, colored paper, egg cartons and other items for arts and crafts projects.

Think thrifty. Donate clothing to charity organizations or sell the items in consignment shops, fairs, bazaars or tag sales. Also, share hand-me-down clothes with family members and neighbors.

One thing you should know about disposing of trash properly that a lot of people often try to miss, is probably the simplest thing you could do in this business.

When you have piles of junk in your back yard that you don’t know how to get rid of, one often thinks of way’s that might help him in disposing of trash properly.

There are many ways to do this, but we will be discussing just ONE of the ways to do this.

One of the ways to do this is to get someone else to do the work and simply pay them.

There are waste disposal companies that specifically work and specialize in picking up your trash.

Everything that you didn’t want to do in the first place will be done by a pro. So you will not have to worry about your trash anymore.

They will load up a dumpster for you and haul it away for one set price.

Most companies now in days are not that cheap to begin with. But if you tell them that you want workers to load up the dumpster for you, they will usually give you a dirt cheap price to make it all in one package.

For example, if you are getting charged $285.00, they will give you a deal if you combine the dumpster with a worker. So for about 4 hours you will end up paying 100 dollars (however, most work takes less than 4 hours, so you can probably work up a deal).

Because if you think about it, most jobs don’t take 4 hours at all.

Of course, it will always depend on the amount of garbage that you will be disposing of and how the people you are hiring will go about getting rid of it.

So now you know, having an all-in-one package can be the real money saver.

Especially if you can bargain the hours (instead of 4 make it 2 for 50 bucks or something of the sort).

Today each industry has its own way of dealing with waste management. When you work in dental waste management there are many things that should be considered. A dentist office can end up making a much less noticeable impact on the environment with certain practices.

There are a few different materials in the dentist office that need to be disposed of in special ways. One of these is the silver that comes from the leftover materials used to make fillings. Silver can be harmful to the environment so it is important that it is disposed of properly.

If you would rather recycle silver there is a special tool that can be used to filter the silver from the materials. The dentist can earn money from recycling the silver. On top of there being silver waste there is also the radiology waste from the x-rays.

X-rays contain harmful radiation and therefore should be disposed of in the right way. There are special services to pick up this type of waste. You could also drop off the waste at a special facility where this type of waste is dealt with.

Finally there are a number of other types of waste. You will find that there is a lot of paper waste in the office as well. This paper waste can all be recycled.

Some other types of recyclable wastes include aluminum and sometimes glass. By doing this one simple step you can greatly improve the environment around you. It really does make a difference even if you do not believe so.

Finally you will see that there are some chemicals that are used in the dental office for cleaning and sterilizing the environment. These chemicals should be disposed of in the proper form. This includes being thrown away in the proper areas rather than washed down the drain.

Recycling is just one option when you are dealing with waste management in a dental office. This is one way that does give some additional benefits. One of these is that you reduce the environmental impact that you have.

Remember that many things are considered to be a part of dental waste management. Making sure that all chemicals and harmful substances are dealt with in the appropriate way is the most important. There are many things that can save your time and energy when it comes to waste management.

We all know that recycling is a wonderful thing for the environment and our world. But can recycling alone solve our waste problems in America? The blunt answer is “No”. There are many reasons why recycling alone will not be able to resolve all our waste problems. If producers and manufacturers do not provide reasonable and accessible methods for consumers to recycle their products, the chances of the products being recycled is significantly reduced.

Companies must be working cooperatively with consumers and partnering with waste management facilities to ensure success. Corporations play the most vital role in reducing the world’s waste problems because they are the only ones who can help tackle waste problems and plan for solutions at the source (even before distribution and consumption).

The Texas Campaign For The Environment (TCE), a non-profit, has recently brought this issue to center stage. According to TCE, the time has come to hold more producers accountable for the full life cycle of their products. TCE believes we must eliminate waste beginning with the source (the producer), and that this requires a complete renovation of the current system of “produce it, consume it, toss it out”. If you think about it, it makes so much sense. There is no real accountability in our current system, as so many producers leave the responsibility for recycling in the hands of consumers. Now of course, you would think consumers will always be ultimately responsible for recycling, since producers cannot force someone to recycle their products. But with the recent momentum of “producer take-back” programs that are mandated by environmental laws and pushed by “Zero Waste” proponents, things are really changing. This would force manufacturers to work with waste management companies and government agencies to recover and recycle their products. For long-term success in reducing waste and the harmful effects of landfills, this strategy makes a lot of sense.

TCE is also not waiting for “producer take-back laws” to become more widespread. They are doing everything they can right now to be a great asset for consumers irrespective of what manufacturers are doing. No matter what you’re trying to recycle, TCE funded TexasTakeBack.org is an outstanding resource for information on recycling all kinds of products from paper to household chemicals to batteries. It is always refreshing to see a non-profit group like TCE working so courageously to solve our country’s waste management problems, and it really shines the light on “for profit” corporations and helps to encourage them to finally go green.

Are your company’s products recycled after consumption? In this time of great change in our world, and from a public relations stand point, it is imperative that your company clearly stands out as a green ambassador. As BP learned (the hard way), you cannot wait until you’re right in the middle of an environmental crisis to start on your journey as a green company. Waiting until “you’re forced” to take action will not work. There is no retreating from this issue. If you haven’t already, your company must begin right now to go green in all phases and protect the environment whenever and wherever you can.

Considering your products often have your brand name on them and can easily be identified when wasted, it is creates even more of a sense of urgency to take action. The question of “how” and “where” your products can be recycled is something that should be easily answered by your customers as a result of the resources and tools your provide for them. Ask for feedback from your customers, blog about it and show the world you are actively working towards a solution to making sure all your products are recycled.

You can even go beyond your own products and remember to consider eco friendly supplies like sustainable pens and lanyards and eco promotional items like custom promotional bags for trade shows and job fairs or eco friendly shopping bags for your retail customers. This soft marketing tactic will definitely help show the world your commitment to go green. These kinds of products are truly eco friendly and will not harm the eco system if wasted. Center your community service events around the idea of doing things to help the environment like planting trees or picking up trash in the community on a reoccurring basis.

These are just a few small examples of the kinds of efforts companies and organizations can make in order to help ensure the continuity and success of the green movement. Consumer eco consciousness is at an all-time high due to so many recent environmental disasters, which means you can’t afford complacency. Be a leader in your industry and take TCE’s advice to go green in all phases today.

One of the last things small to medium enterprises want to consider are their waste management costs. The waste process of a company is not at the top of a managers list of jobs to sort – plus waste management is often a relatively small cost compared to other utilities.

You have many responsibilities as a business owner, and one of these is with regard to how your waste is disposed of. The costs of waste disposal can be from a few hundred to several thousand pounds, and those with multiple sites with multiple bins even more so. So, there are still considerable cost savings to be made.

One major increase in costs is due to landfill tax over the last 10 years, as government policy dictates less should be in landfill. This has increased from 21 a tonne in April 2006 to 48 per tonne in April 2010.

The recent emergency budget confirmed a price increase of 8% per year until at least 2014 – making the per tonne cost a staggering 80. The regular SME is not charged by weight, but these costs will be passed on to you via more expensive waste collections.

So, how can you make cost savings?

Many firms will tempt you in with low prices, and then increase the costs every April as landfill tax increases – so make sure you use your right to cancel, or at least threaten so, and use this to leverage cheaper rates

Write “one months notice to cancel at any time” on your contact – might save you a few quid if prices rise sharply.

Make sure you approach at least 3 companies to get a quote – or use a waste broker to management this prices. Watch for extras such as bin rental, duty of care charges etc

It is really important that you have a Waste Transfer Note, as this is a legal requirement – this means you know who is collecting your waste, and where it is going.

Recycle More! Not only does recycling help the environment, it can actually be cheaper too. Much of the waste that you generate can be recycled (cardboard, paper, plastics) and this is less expensive to dispose of too.

It may be worth looking into waste equipment such as balers, compactors and composters that can reduce the space waste takes up and therefore save money – many waste management companies can provide an audit to show you where you could save money.

Remember the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – examine where your waste is coming from – can it be reduced or eliminated, speak to suppliers about reducing their packaging.

Think about items you throw away – paper, envelopes etc – can you use these for another purpose instead of them going straight to a landfill.

It is worth checking the night before your bin collections how full they are – do they stay empty most of the time, do you have peak times when you need 2 bins, not 1? Consider reducing the amount of bins you have, and consider compactors to reduce the size of waste.

Making sure your business is legally compliant is very important – so consider using a specialist waste broker with years of experience in the business to advise you and save you money on your waste.

For all the waste that is generated by America, it has to be taken care of somehow. There are literately tons of garbage being produced every week, and despite the sheer volume of it, the streets aren’t clogged with refuse and the sidewalks are clear of litter. So what gives? Surely this all has to go somewhere. But how? The answer to that question lies in the garbage truck that does its duty every week for you. More than that, the company behind that truck and the person who drives it are responsible for making certain that your trash is picked up on time every week and delivered to its proper destination to be disposed of properly.

Waste Management Driver as a Career

Being a waste management driver is not a career most people consider when looking for a job. However, it’s very rewarding and gives you tremendous experience hauling commercial trucks. It also pays pretty well too, considering the effort involved. It’s not an easy job, but it’s streamlined and it treats the environment well by being a very crucial element of the waste management process that takes trash and delivers it where it needs to go in order to be disposed of in a safe and responsible manner.

Waste Management Driver

In order to drive a truck, a waste management driver requires a commercial truck driver’s license. This can be obtained by applying for one at the department of motor vehicles and demonstrating your capacity to handle freight vehicles. Of course, this comes with experience, and that can be obtained either by going through training classes or by seeing the real deal for yourself and riding shotgun with one of those talented waste management drivers who handle the road on a daily basis and get the dirty work done. From there, you can learn the tools and tricks of the trade and develop experience understanding the way the trucks operate and how to utilize them for the job.

Waste management isn’t a simple effort, but it’s made efficient and straightforward by the work everybody does in the business from one point to the next, and the waste management driver position is one of the most crucial in regards to keeping things in proper motion. It’s a job that requires determination, focus, responsibility, and skill, but it pays back for everything it takes to make it through the day and to leave the world a cleaner place, one trashcan or dumpster at a time. Without waste management drivers, there would be nobody handling the task of transporting waste, and then the entire industry would collapse. They’re essential members of a larger effort at keeping our environments clean and our lifestyles healthy.

Everyday thousands upon thousands of pounds of refuse are hauled away from the homes of everyday American citizens hoping to be relieved of the burden of having to keep their trash in their possession. This job just doesn’t take care of itself, it’s provided by the likes of those dedicated members of the waste management workforce that go through the motions of handling garbage on a daily basis.

However, even with their best efforts and intentions, there is a good number of tools and equipment that goes along with the job to get things done. One such tool is the waste management truck, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the transportation and delivery of waste to waste processing facilities in order to dispose of it proper.

Waste management trucks are often called by other names. The official title is a waste collection vehicle, but they’re usually simply called garbage trucks, dump trucks, dustcarts, dustbin lorries, or other such colloquial terms. Regardless of the name, the function these vehicles provide is the same from one truck to the next: to pick up certain quantities of waste and haul it off to landfills, recycling facilities, or treatment plants. They’re quite a common sight when it comes to urban areas and whatnot, but they’re never obstructive or anything like that. Instead, they get their jobs done quickly and efficiently, and drop back into the shadows to leave the public with their clean and tidy lives.

Waste management trucks are something fierce when it comes to getting the job done. They’re quiet and unassuming otherwise, but they have powerful motors that are often powered by diesel that help them get things moving. Waste management trucks come in several varieties, such as front loaders, rear loaders, automated side loaders, pneumatic collection mechanisms, grapple trucks, and more. With so many variations on the same basic principle, they’re quite versatile, and get many tasks done that ordinary trucks couldn’t possibly achieve.

When it comes down to it, the cleanliness we enjoy in modern life can be attributed to waste management trucks. They do the jobs of moving around waste so that we don’t have to deal with it, and they contribute a great deal to environmental cleanliness and sanitary living conditions not only at home, but everywhere we go. In America, the entire infrastructure of waste management depends on waste management trucks to haul around what others have disposed of, so they’re essentially not only responsible for that job but also for the beauty they help maintain in our everyday environment.
