Reducing Paper Waste, One Computer at a Time

While computers have the ability to reduce paper by a large amount through the use of databases and other office productivity software, there has actually been no decrease in the amount of paper used in North American offices. This is partly due to the continued practice of keeping paper records, but largely due to simple waste.

There are still plenty of ways to save paper waste at the office. One technology is to use a simple program that ends the practice of printing out blank or nearly blank pages at the end of reports. Another that might have a surprising impact is asking (or letting your IT department curb) employees printing out personal data, emails and web pages on the company dime. Another way that can have a very significant impact is investing in mobile technologies that allow users to simply carry web pages with them.
