There is a chemistry experiment going on at the bottom of the many landfills across North America. This includes chemicals that no one has any idea what they do on their own. However, far more dangerous are the potentially very active, synergistic chemical reactions that these chemicals can have with each other sometimes with disastrous results. The fact is, no one knows.
Some of these chemicals are naturally occurring, such as in the case of he natural byproducts of anaerobic decomposition. But, far more often, it is he thousands of man-made chemicals that have been created since the early 20th century that are of concern.
And the potential for harm is great. In some of the first experiments that combine common household waste chemicals, powerful endocrine disruptors and hormone mimics have been discovered. Some resultant chemicals even attack body parts directly.
